Tahoma Junior Bears Wrestling
Our Maple Valley youth wrestling team is making a name change! For 40 years, our high school team has received tremendous support from our local youth wrestling program. Originally Maple Valley's youth wrestling program started in the Spring of 1976 with a handful of kids. Known originally as the "Maple Valley Matrats," kids competed as an AAU Freestyle Club competin in the Western Washington Kids League.
In late 1991, Steve Deutschman crafted the programs founding bylaws, mission statement and board structure. Steve was also the acting president of Maple Valley Raiders Football at the time. In 1996, the club's presidient Tim Walsh led the matrats into the highly competitive independent Pierce County Junior League. At that time, our local club changed names to the "Maple Valley Wolfpack."
This season, we will making another name change. This year, our team will compete as "Tahoma Junior Bears Wrestling." We believe that this name change better aligns our community programs and will help to prepare our wrestlers for smooth transitions into middle school and high school wrestling. The club is open to all wrestlers in the surrounding area and not just Tahoma School District Students.
Opportunities for youth wrestling in Maple Valley continue to thrive due to having so many volunteers past and present. In recent years, we have seen a decline in our volunteer Coaches. We are in desperate need of more Coaches for practice and events. Former Wolfpack Dads and former Tahoma wrestlers, if you are able to donate some of your time, please contact Pam Gabel at matmomma@gmail.com to get more information.
