Bear Brawl Brilliance: Tahoma Wrestlers Blank Kentwood 76-0
In a thrilling display of wrestling prowess, the Tahoma Bears clashed with their long-time league rivals, the Kentwood Conks, on the evening of December 13, 2023. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as fans eagerly awaited the showdown between these formidable adversaries. Lots of Bear fans from both past and present filled the stands getting louder and louder with each Tahoma win.
The Bears wasted no time asserting their dominance, with the match commencing at the 150-pound weight class featuring the seasoned Two-Time Tahoma wrestling state finalist, Joe Sullivan. The crowd erupted as Sullivan executed a flawless match finishing with pin against Kentwood's David Long, garnering an early lead of 6-0 for Tahoma.
The momentum continued to build for the Bears as Andrew Feist secured an impressive fall, and Isac Deonigi bumped up a weight class earning the technical fall against Kentwood’s Andrew Fletcher. Adriano Perez claimed a forfeit at 175 pounds, contributing to a commanding lead of 22-0. Dylan Stover's swift fall at 190 pounds showed how far he has come in the past year putting in work to improve.
A standout moment from the dual came from Ethan Edwards, who, despite starting his match down a quick 2 points, made a quick and decisive comeback out wrestling his opponent to secure a pin, further solidifying Tahoma's dominance in every aspect of the match.
In the 285-pound weight class, Alex Mondt exhibited exceptional skill, securing a swift fall against Kentwood's LeeAndrew Rubin in just 60 seconds. Tahoma's lead soared to 40-0, leaving the audience in awe of the Bears' collective strength and putting a hush on the crowd from Kentwood.
As the match progressed, Tahoma wrestlers continued to dominate their opponents, showcasing both skill and resilience. The scoreboard experienced some intermittent issues, briefly turning off during and at the end of the match. Despite these technical hiccups, the Bears maintained their focus and composure. The Bears had a number of wrestlers weigh in and then bump a weight class to make up having two starters out of the line up.
The final bout at 144 pounds featured Gavin Wells, delivered a dominant performance. Wells, a freshman, secured a technical fall with a score of 19-2 against Kentwood's Ben Porras, culminating in a final score of 76-0 after a review of the scorebook.
The Junior Varsity also delivered a big win on the night with a number of great performances. The JV squad had eight falls in the match!
