Tahoma Bears Make Their Mark at the Sierra Nevada Classic

Over the last two days in Reno, Nevada, the mats were alive with the energy and determination of the Tahoma Bears wrestling team. In a remarkable display of skill and tenacity, our wrestlers battled it out against some of the best, finishing a strong third out of 92 teams at the Sierra Nevada Classic. The team missed taking second place by just one point!

93 teams prepare to battle at the Sierra Nevada Classic

The highlight of the tournament was the outstanding performances of Crew Lambro in the 106 weight class and Cyrus Comia in the 157. Both wrestlers clinched the top spots in their weights, with Lambro contributing 32.0 team points, defeating Nate Mitchell (Del Oro) by a score of 5-1. Cyrus Comia added 34.0 points to the team effort with a win over Brennen Benedict (Pahrump Valley) by a score of 10-5. Their wins were testaments to the hard work they’ve put in during the off-season.

Close behind, in the 144-pound weight class, was Joe Sullivan, who fought valiantly to secure second place. Joe lost in a match that was closer than the score suggested to Jagger French (Del Oro) by a score of 7-4. Isac Deonigi, competing in the 150-pound weight class, also had an impressive run, finishing third and contributing 27.5 points by beating Anthony Vargas (Central) with a score of 8-7.

Our strength was not just in the top finishers but in the depth of our team who battled through the back door of the tournament. Owen Marshall (120) faced one of the toughest weight classes in the tournament and finished in 7th place, along with Adriano Perez (165). Both wrestlers showed great resilience. Every match, every point they fought for, added to our overall success.

Our six placers heading to the venue for placing matches

The team’s journey to the podium was a group effort. We brought 19 wrestlers to compete, and a number of wrestlers were unable to score for the team due to being doubled up at weights. Carter Tughan (113), Alex Othon (126), Dylan Stover (175), and Kage Repenn (190) also had strong showings but came up just short of placing. Our focus on top position wrestling is starting to pay off, as the team had the second most pins in the tournament with 38.

The team takes 3rd place at the Sierra Nevada Classic

We have things to work on, but we're very happy with how the team wrestled this past weekend. The team will fly home from Reno this evening. We have an away dual this coming week at Kentridge High School on Wednesday night. Our Varsity will be taking next weekend off and our JV will be competing in a dual tournament held at Tahoma High School. Thank you to the many parents that traveled with us to Reno, helping with logistics, cheering us on and keeping the boys fed during the tournament. Thank you to our Booster Club and our Sponsors. Without you, we would not be able to compete in these types of tournaments and give our kids these types of experiences.

We’re proud of what we’ve achieved here at the Sierra Nevada Classic and excited for what the future holds. For full details on our matches and individual scores, check out the results at www.trackwrestling.com.
